my apartment smells like banana bread and i found the happy.
there had been this disturbing odour to my flat. don’t get me wrong here – not like “bathroom hasn’t been cleaned” or “old garbage”-disturbing odour. you know me. i’m clean. no – it was more like wet dog. and I don’t have a dog. i finally deduced that it was my laundry detergent. it’s eco-friendly, which apparently means that you do away with all fragrances and perfumes and are left with, well, wet dog. I bought some Persil non-biological or some such and now my apartment smells like banana bread. which is good and bad.
i finally found the happy. i’ve been like c’mon! you got funding!* you should be happy! but in the back of my mind there’s been this niggling – but its contingent on re-doing the costings and you still have to apply for a research degree and you still need a visa – thing. i had dinner with four of my favourite people tonight (one of whom is my somewhat reluctant supervisor – more on that later). she sorted all three of my niggling things in one second by saying she would email so-and-so tomorrow and would i email her wednesday to remind her to email that visas woman and whoosh. the happy has arrived. she launched a deftly professional ‘it’s all going to be OK’ and suddenly it feels like it actually will. she’s not so much reluctant as amused i’ve chosen her as my supervisor since she admits to knowing very little about my topic of choice. i say pshaw – we’ll learn together. nothing can spoil the happy right now…
* PhD funding. ya! gonna build a crazy model to estimate influenza incidence. woo. so excited but curiously still stressed.
