i bet you thought i'd kicked off.........
just right now i have the urge to tell someone to go suck an egg, but that's not representative of my overall mood since last week when i:
1. got word that i had two interviews and one quasi-interview
2. had two good interviews (one quasi)
3. got offered a job
4. accepted said job (see below)
5. resigned from my current job (working as an assistant to lucifer, in hell)
6. and became aware of quite an attractive young, brown, dutch guy who seems to be following me around (in the good way, and there is a good way) and who i found out today is named richard and who i will now attempt to seduce and have a brief (much needed) fling with in cambridge until 10 july when i pile on outta here. my friend barbara is in on this plan and has thrown her support behind it.
Job: doing a 6-month analysis of cancer data to see whether attempts to improve services for cancer patients has succeeded in doing so to an equivalent extent for different cancer types. read: health services research (duncan - can you believe it??). I vowed in that whippersnapper-esque-and-thus-totally-inappropriate way that i would never EVER do health services research. and so it goes.
AND this job allows me to work either full-time for 6 months or part-time for 12 months which would leave me open to apply for a similar-length contract with laura/craig/london school of hygiene people that i used to work with and LOVE and if i get this job (pork consumption and salmonella typhi foodborne illness) i would get to help tutor on the master's course and yay yay yay!!
so next steps are to decide whether to come home for 2-3 weeks in June before starting in london (which would rock, but then i'd miss my family reunion for second year in a row in august) OR see if I can start my new job in june and take 2-3 weeks off in late july-early august. will have to negotiate with new boss. yay NEW BOSS! oh ya, and the minor thing of finding a flat in london. this could be tricky, but my friend ann has said i can stay with her at the first if i need and my friends have been suggesting areas to look in and it is all just really really exciting and exhilirating and i'm not thinking about anything else right now (for a change) and thank GOD for that.
some of the sentences in this post have been long, reminiscent of the old testament of the bible, where when you are up there on the altar reading them on sunday morning you're not sure where you can take a breath, but the opinions expressed here do not necessarily (obviously) represent those recorded in this other text.

did you often read 'on' the altar? if so, how did you get up there? did they provide a step stool of some ornate and appropriately pious description?
i have an image of you reclining on the altar pondering your next breath taking pause...congrats on the new job.

if only! i was referring to the whole raised bit at the front of the church, on which stands the lecturn, for readings, and the altar (OK, that is confusing), where the celebrant stands to say most of the mass. might liven things up a bit if readings were read from a reclined position atop this (second) altar. does benedict IXV have a suggestion box?
