as good a place as any
ah, research. it seems to go something like this:
day one: you think you may have had an idea.
day one (a little bit later on): you read a few more papers and think "wow! i'm a genius for thinking the same thing as this really smart dude at harvard"
day two: you realise it may be tough to answer that question because a) the necessary data may not exist and if they do they are probably guarded by a gremlin at cambridge and b) you wouldn't know what to do even if the data were in your lap! write up a proposal anyway just to feel like you've done something.
day three: meet with your supervisors. two seem interested and the third, though also into your idea (because, of course, it was her idea to begin with) rolls her eyes when you start an answer to her question with "i'm not sure. i've been trying to figure that out...". yes, rolls her eyes. i guess doing a phd is about knowing everything before you start!
day two (a little bit later on): roll up to your desk again with fresh resolve (and a pit in your stomach). and on it goes....
